Songwon Industrial Co, Ltd reports on some of its successful in-house sustainability efforts relating to both energy conservation and efficiency and emphasised its commitment to the environment across the organisation.
At Songwon’s Panoli site in Gujarat, India, the company’s hub for speciality chemicals, both energy efficiency and conservation have been at the top of the agenda.
"The plant team has been concentrating its efforts on developing effective actions directly intended to conserve energy in the area of electricity but also natural gas, which will dramatically reduce emissions and benefit the organisation with cost savings too,” explained Byungsoo Boo, Leader Operations.
According to Boo, Songwon has also begun replacing its natural gas fired steam boiler at the Panoli facility with an agro-waste fired steam boiler.
When completed, it will mean a successful shift from non-renewable energy to renewable energy with considerable expected savings and a substantial contribution to the reduction of harmful emissions.
Meanwhile in Korea, at Songwon’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ulsan, the company has been replacing the metal-halide lights throughout the plant with LED.
This has already led to noticeable benefits.
Due to the fact that LED lights are more energy efficient, using only approximately 10% of the energy a metal-halide needs and have a much longer service-life, the plant has succeeded in reducing energy consumption, as well as overall costs.
Furthermore, LEDs are much safer for operators due to less heat being emitted.
In four years, Songwon says it expects the switch to save 1884t of CO2 and 425MW/yr.
Also in the USA, Songwon International – Americas Inc, located in Houston, has transferred the office’s energy source to full renewable energy and is offsetting 100% of the business’ electricity usage with third party verified Renewable Energy Certificates.
Commenting, Olivier Keiser, Chief Sustainability Officer at Songwon said: "One of the foundations of our sustainability strategy is to make sure that we endeavour to make all of our business activities as environmentally and economically sustainable as possible.
"In line with this, we are continually looking inside the organisation in our drive to optimise processes, source more efficiently and use resources to reduce Songwon’s environmental impact.
"These are just a few examples of some of our most recent successful undertakings.”
